Sight Your Rifle in 3 Shots or Less — Fast, Precise Zeroing Tips | MCJ Optics

By the MCJ Optics Team – Updated August 2025

Zeroing your rifle doesn't have to drain your ammo or patience. At MCJ Optics, we simplify the process—sight your rifle in accurately with just three shots using this proven method used by expert marksmen and hunters alike.

Step 1: Bore-Sight for Speed and Confidence

Begin by bore-sighting your rifle. This ensures your first shot lands “on paper,” saving both ammo and time—an essential step before dialing in your optic.

Step 2: First Live Shot—Establish Your Offset

Set up on a stable bench rest with your target at your desired zero distance (e.g., 100 yards). Take one precise shot, then use your reticle subtensions—much like a built-in ruler—to measure angle and distance from the point of aim. Adjust elevation and windage accordingly: if your impact is high, dial down; low, dial up; left—move right, and vice versa.

Step 3: Second Shot—Zero In

After dialing in your first correction, fire a second shot. It should land very close to your aim point—typically within 1 MOA. A third shot then confirms your zero.

Why This Method Works

  • Ammo-efficient: Only three rounds required to achieve a reliable zero.
  • Consistent adjustment: Using subtensions ensures precise, repeatable turret dialing.
  • Minimized guesswork: Methodical, data-driven adjustments eliminate trial-and-error.

Supportive Best Practices

Pair this method with sound fundamentals: use a stable rest, establish a natural point of aim, and shoot from a rested, relaxed position to ensure accuracy.
